Renault 18 (1978-1986)
1978
Presentation in April 1978. Four models in the range, among which two can
be equipped with an automatic gearbox. 154.917 units sold, the beginning
of a commercial success.
1979
Some rare equipment changes. 366.811
units made.The 18 break is sold for
March 1979. Three models available (TL-TS-TSauto)
1980
New range, with the "L" version and its poor equipment. New automatic
version. 352.336 R18 made that year
1981
Two new models: the Diesels and the Turbo. 342.829 Renault 18 made.
1982
The end for the TS and Break automatic. New GTL, GTS ans GTD Breaks. The
GTL (Sedan and Break) get the 1,6 litre engine, with only 73 hp and
five-speed gearbox. 289.492 R18 made.
1983
New, more powerful automatic version. Diesel and Turbo automatic versions
available. New Break Turbo, with a new, more powerful engine: 125 hp DIN.
New 4WD breaks. The "American" model with specific paint and equipment
released in March 1983. Only 236.138 R18 made.
1984
Autumn 1983: the GTX, with the two liter of the R25, released. It replaces
the 18 GTS. New 18 Turbo Diesel. "Type 2", with stylistic gimmicks taken
from the 25 (front grille, spoilers). 167.056 R18 made in 1984.
1985
No noticeable change, but the 18 GTD automatic disappears. 92.347 R18 get
out from factories.
1986
Summer 1985: all models are called "Gala". No more Turbo. 33.055 18 made
in the world in 1986, among them 20.038 in France.
1987 to 1994
The 18 sales stopped in 1986 in France and Europe, but the production went
on for export purposes. Argentina and Uruguay were the only places were it
was made hereafter, until 1994. Some 130.000 Renault 18 would have been
made, according to statistics.
